"The Tower" - Toqua District Best Overall Troop

"The Tower" traveling award was first given out at the Toqua Spring Camporee held in the fall of 1983. The award was at first given out twice a year at the fall and spring camporee to the "Best Overall Troop". The theme and camporee location are announced about four months in advance with a general description of the competition. The winner of the Tower is determined by eight to ten competition events that usually include: knots/pioneering; fire building/cooking; map and compass/orienteering; first aid/emergency preparedness; patrol flag design; and other events related to the camporee theme or location. Scheduling conflicts and other factors caused the award to be changed to a yearly award at the spring camporee. This change allowed the district to hold district service projects or special site events as well as participate in council-wide "jamboree" events. Beginning 1997, Varsity Teams, Venture Crews, and Explorer Posts began competing in a "Varsity/Venture Challenge" which the creation of "The Tooth" award was given. Although, the specific award was retired, the "Venture Challenge" weekends continue each year. As of 1997, only Boy Scout Troops are eligible to win "The Tower".
